The Good, The Bad, and the Insignificant

On today’s blog… a story of God’s protection from our team in South Dakota. What could have been a tragic end to a wonderful time of ministry ended up being the unmistakable hand of God’s protection.

We were leaving a restaurant in Nebraska heading back to our hotel about 26 miles away on Saturday night. Our caravan consisted of 3 minivans and a 2003 Chevy Suburban. As we came out of the restaurant and moved to our vehicles, one of the minivans pulled out. I was driving the Suburban, and pulled out a few seconds later. Not seeing where the first van went, I proceeded to get back onto Hwy 20 to head across to Gordon, NE.

Christa, one of the ladies on our team had texted me the map back to Gordon, which was basically just a straight shot across 20. We had come in a different direction, so I was a little disoriented. I followed a road that looked promising, but in the absence of a road sign, began to pull over and let one of the other vans…

Mission to Pine Ridge

Plains Panorama1Today, I’m going to do something a little different with my blog.

As many of you who follow my blog are probably aware, we currently have a mission team in South Dakota, ministering to the Oglala-Sioux and Oglala-Lakota Indians. I thought that today I would let one of my “boots-on-the-ground” missionaries share a little bit about the work that is going on at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

“We arrived at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on Tuesday afternoon after a day of taking in some of the sites in this region (Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse monument, etc.). When we arrived on the reservation (“the rez”), it didn’t take long to be in awe of its sheervastness. When we passed the sign announcing that we were on the rez, we drove for nearly another forty-five minutes before we reached the Pine Ridge Baptist Church, our base of operations for this mission. The church sits at an intersection with almost nothing but open plains stretched out in every direction. The land is a reflection of its inhabitants: Beautiful, yet empty; neglected, yet full of untapped potential. These people are the descendants of a heritage of broken promises, shattered dreams, and empty assurances.

Words escape me when I attempt to describe our first day of ministering to the children here. Forty-seven children showed up for the first day of fun and ministry, and the thing that stood out to everyone on the mission team was the yearning for love, and just a gentle touch from another person. One team member described how she was sitting with one of the young girls who was not feeling well, and was patting her on the arm. When she stopped, the young girl begged her to continue. It was obvious she was desperate for a touch of kindness from another person.

As we continue ministry this week, please pray for strength for the team, and open hearts, eager for the love of Jesus in those who come to the church. We are somewhat limited in our ability to post since wireless and internet access are somewhat limited on the rez. Thank you so much for the prayers thus far. Keep them coming… the need is great.

An Indelible Mark

Through the Looking GlassIn May of 1981, Turkish assassin Mehmet Ali Ağca shot Pope John Paul II multiple times, nearly killing him. On December 27, 1983, in a move that stunned the world, Pope John Paul visited his would-be assassin in prison… and forgave him.

In speaking of the event and Ağca, the Pontiff asked people to “pray for my brother, whom I have sincerely forgiven.” It is said that the two men became friends, with the Pope even reaching out to members of Ağca’s family. Upon the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005, Ağca’s brother issued a statement saying that their family was in mourning, as the Pope had been a great friend to them.

Although the Pope bore the physical scars from that event in his body for the rest of his life, the indelible mark that really mattered was the one left in Mehmet Ali Ağca’s heart, as well as the hearts of those close to him… the mark of forgiveness.

Jesus bore the marks of your sin and shame when He paid your debt on the cross. However, He announced His true intention and left an indelible mark on every heart that would look to Him – from the Roman guards who oversaw His crucifixion, down through history to you and me – when He said, “Father… forgive them”.

Is there someone in your life in need of your forgiveness? Is their someone who has wronged you that needs to hear the words, “You are forgiven”?

After all, forgiveness is not about justice — forgiveness is about freedom.

Yours.

Leave that “indelible mark” on someone today.

Honoring Memorial Day

Today is the day we in America take pause to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation.  While most of us will spend the day with family and friends, we must not forget those who, by their commitment to freedom, made it possible for us to enjoy the lives we have been blessed with. The spirit of this day is best summed up in the words of President Abraham Lincoln, as he stood on the fields of Gettysburg four-and-a-half months after the cannons, muskets, and war-cries were silenced…

Flag2The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. ~ from The Gettysburg Address, November 19, 1863

For Oklahoma

       There are no words that adequately describe what our friends in Oklahoma are going through right now. The people of Moore and Oklahoma City are our relatives, friends, neighbors, and fellow Americans. As we observe from afar the devastation on newscasts and internet sites, our hearts are broken for the families who have lost loved-ones, as well as those who have lost all of their earthly possessions.

For the next 24 hours (through 12:00 noon on May 23, 2013), we at Abba’s House and Ron Phillips Ministries are asking our friends to help make a difference in the lives of those in Oklahoma. We know from experience how much every dollar means in times like this, and how important it is for action to be swift and decisive. Through the boots-on-the-ground assistance of The Southern Baptist Convention, as well as much needed supply lines set up by Operation Compassion, Abba’s House is raising money for these two humanitarian organizations to help ease the suffering of those affected by this tragedy.

Now is the time for all of us to step up and do something above and beyond – showing the love of Jesus in a real and tangible way to those who are frightened, hungry, tired, and hurting.

Jesus said, “Inasmuch as you’ve done it unto the least of these, you’ve done it unto Me”.

Jesus is calling… Won’t you answer?

The Mystery of The Hiram Code

Anyone who knows me, or has watched my program Ron Phillips from Abba’s House for any length of time, knows two things about me:

I love Israel. God said of Israel, “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you“. The nation of Israel and the Jewish people have always been close to my heart. I have traveled to Israel over a dozen times. We are a part of The One New Man partnership with Rabbi Curt Landry’s ministry (The House of David, in Tulsa, Ok). We have invested time, resources, and energy into bringing our viewers products made exclusively in Israel, such as The King’s Oil, as well as the tallits (prayer shawls) our ministry offers. In my more than 6 decades of life, I have learned that if skeptics and critics will simply be honest and look at the FACTS, the Bible will come out as being EXACTLY what it is… the historically-accurate account of the love of God to man – the true, living, and infallible Word of God.

   Hiram TombWith that being said, unlocking the secrets of The Hiram Code was something I dove into with both feet! The more I read and studied, the more fascinating and intriguing it became. The revelations that scientists have made in recent years are shattering our understanding of our own history. For example, did you know…

… that the ancient craftsmen Phoenicians intermarried with the Jewish tribes of Dan, Naphtali, and Zebulun?
