Going Down With the Ship

Through the Looking Glass        On April 14, 1912 at 11:40p.m., the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage. In less than three hours, it slipped beneath the surface and sank at 2:20a.m. on April 15… 101 years ago today.

What was it that sent this mighty ship to its watery grave in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean? Was it a massive, gaping hole caused by the collision?

No.

Some experts have speculated that, had the Titanic hit the iceberg head-on, it would have survived. What sunk this magnificent vessel was a series of small holes and cracks punched along the hull by the iceberg. It was the the culmination of all of the seemingly insignificant cracks that led to a breakdown of the fail-safes and safeties, and took the great ship to its watery grave, over two miles down on the ocean floor.

TitanicWhat a picture of the Christian life.

For most of us, it is not the “major events” in our lives that put distance between us and our Savior. It is the little things – the gradual slipping away – that results in that loss of fellowship. It is our unwillingness to surrender completely to the will and authority of Christ that begins the breakdown in our own fail-safes.

In his book, Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis hits the nail on the head:

“Christ says ‘Give me all. I don’t want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want You. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it… I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself: my own will shall become yours.’”

Are you feeling like you are sinking? What are the little things that you need to surrender to the Lordship of Jesus? Find those, and you’ll find the lifeboat you need to carry on.

Who Is Writing Your Future?

Through the Looking Glass           As we approach the anniversary of the assassination of one of America’s greatest presidents later this week, I am reminded of this story:

Robert Todd Lincoln
Robert Todd Lincoln

Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, was once standing on a crowded railroad platform when he was pushed up against the side of the train by the pressing crowd. Suddenly, the train began to move, and Robert fell into the space between the platform and the moving train. Facing serious injury or death, he felt someone reach down, grab his collar, and lift him up to safety. As he turned to thank the person who had saved his life, he instantly recognized the face…

It was renowned actor Edwin Booth, the older brother of John Wilkes Booth.

Lincoln
President Abraham Lincoln

Following the assassination of President Lincoln at the hands of his brother, Edwin recalled that the memory of saving the son of the slain president was one of the only things that kept him sane in the dark months that followed the night of April 14, 1865.

Is your past is checkered by the notoriety of others, or maybe by your own actions?

If so, I have good news for you…

We serve a God who is bigger than our past, mightier than our memories, and makes all things new!

The past is what it is.

Trust Jesus to write your future.

Be Consistent

Through the Looking GlassConsider this quote:

“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”

In making this statement, I believe author and former Franciscan priest Brennan Manning hit the nail squarely on the head.

Whether by commission or omission, the church has allowed godlessness to permeate our society. We have allowed our “nation under God” to bury the Presence of God under a mountain of misinterpreted laws and legal catchphrases.

So what can the church do?

We can be consistent. We can practice what we preach. We can show our love for Christ by a lifestyle that is consistent with the Bible we claim to believe.

So, here’s the challenge:

Be that consistent light that the world needs. Don’t just believe it… live it. Let’s see if, just by walking our talk, we can make a difference in a world that needs Jesus.

Nothing But The Blood

Through the Looking Glass     The Petersen House in Washington D.C. is the house across the street from Ford’s Theatre where a mortally wounded Abraham Lincoln was taken after being shot by John Wilkes Boothe. A few hours later, Lincoln succumbed to his wounds and, as then-Secretary of War Edwin Stanton observed, passed into the ages.

For years, his blood-stained pillow remained on display – a testimony to the horrific events of April 14, 1865, and the violent death of one of our greatest presidents.

A while back, some friends of mine visited the Petersen House only to discover that the pillow had been removed, and placed into storage. The only item that contained the blood of the Great Emancipator had been taken out of public sight, and put into a place where it could, potentially, be forgotten.

As Christians, we must never let it be forgotten that it is only by the blood — the blood of Jesus — that we have been forgiven. We must never forget the price that was paid when Jesus spilled His blood, and willingly gave up His life out of love for us.

In this time of history revisionism and self-obsession, as well as being an appropriate reminder during this Holy Week, may this story remind us all that we must never lose sight of the ONLY thing that can save us… the blood of Jesus.

How to Change the World (with a Frog as Your Spokesman)

Through the Looking Glass        When James and Richard met at a convention, they seemed destined to work together. They entered into a creative partnership, and led a team of performers that brought smiles to the faces of children and adults alike for decades.

Speaking about working with his team, James once said that…

“I’ve never felt any sense of competition with anybody, we’re all friends; we’re all good friends.”

Isn’t that how the Body of Christ should be? No competition… just each person operating in their gifts, while celebrating the gifts of others while we press toward a common goal: Reaching the world with the love of Jesus.

James ‘Jim’ Henson and Richard Frank Oznowicz – aka ‘Frank Oz’- were the driving force behind the Muppets, making the world laugh at the antics of Kermit the Frog and his friends.

If a small group of puppeteers can make the world smile, how much more should a unified Body of Christ have the ability to change that same world through love?

DR mapThis week…

I will be ministering with a small group of very gifted friends as we bring the light of Jesus to the people of the Dominican Republic. We will be ministering to local pastors (as well as their wives and staff), and doing street evangelism. In the evenings, we will be holding open-air crusades at a local sports stadium, and sharing the Gospel to the masses in the Santiago area. My son, Ronnie Jr., will be ministering at these events, and sharing the word God has laid on his heart for the people there. It is going to be a powerful time of salvation, healing, and Holy Spirit power.

We are praying that lives will be forever changed.

We are praying for a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the people of that area.

We are believing God for thousands of souls to be added to the eternal roll of the Kingdom of God.

Will you join us? Will you pray for our team? Will you partner with us in prayer for the salvation of the people of the Dominican Republic?

Keep following along this week. I will be commenting and keeping you updated as often as possible.

We are believing for God to change the Dominican Republic… one heart at a time.

Have a blessed week, everyone!

Hollywood & A Holy Perspective

Through the Looking Glass                      Randall Wallace is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and director, having worked on such movies as Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, The Man In The Iron Mask, and Secretariat.         Mr. Wallace had this to say about his faith…

“An essential reason that I am Christian

is that I fully understand

that I’m not God… I need God.” *

Wallace Sword

Mr. Wallace understands a couple of truths that some politicians, performers, and pagans for years have failed to come to grips with:

Truth #1: There is a God in Heaven Who is holy, righteous, loving, merciful and just.

Truth #2: You are NOT Him.

We do ourselves and God a great disservice when we ascribe to Him our flawed humanity instead of the glory and honor that are due Him. We as the creation must continually resist the urge to make the Creator less than what He is… HOLY.

I am the Lord, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator, your King.” ~ Isaiah 43:15

Where Is Your Treasure?

Through the Looking Glass

Few would argue the value of having a teachable spirit…

Chinese philosopher Confucius said… “Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous”.

American businessman Henry Ford said… “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young”.

English novelist Aldous Huxley said… “Experience is not what happens to you; it’s what you do with what happens to you. Experience teaches only the teachable”.

Sure, things in our economy are tough right now, but we’ve been here before, and worse. However, it’s not so much about what we do at this time that will make the long term difference…

It’s about what we, as a nation, take from this experience, and apply to the future.

Jesus said that “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”. Treasure stored up in an earthly financial market is easily lost. Make sure that your treasure is stored up in God’s unshakeable Kingdom.

And His Kingdom will never end!

A Word to the Wise

Through the Looking GlassAlan Alda is probably best known for playing Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce on the hit television show, M*A*S*H. But for all of the silliness of his character on the show, Mr. Alda once made this quote:

“Be as smart as you can be, but remember that it is always better to be wise than to be smart.”

A lot of people do not know the difference between being smart and being wise. You might say that being smart is having a lot of knowledge, but that being wise is knowing how to use that knowledge. Just take a look at the news, for example, and you will understand: politics, the stock market, entertainment news… we are constantly hearing about a lot of smart people making very unwise decisions.

In His word, God continually encourages us to be wise…

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” ~ Psalm 111:10

God lets us know, in no uncertain terms, that there is no true wisdom apart from Him. With that being said, in this time in our nation’s history, it is more important than ever for all of us to seek the wisdom that only comes from seeking the face of God.

Change Your View

Through the Looking Glass     C.S. Lewis once said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it, I see everything else”.

Some people have the very mistaken idea that Christianity is just a religion – a set of rules and regulations by which we live our lives. Maybe that is because, all too often, we as Christians live in a way that is inconsistent with what we claim to believe.

Jesus said, “Love your neighbor”… Do we?

Jesus cared for the poor… Do we take the time?

Jesus reached out to the unlovely and unlovable… Do we make the effort?

Christianity, in it’s truest sense, is not about religion. It is a relationship with the God of the universe. It is a relationship by which our entire view of the world changes, as we view those around us through the eyes of Christ.

So, here’s a challenge for your week: Take the time to see those around you the way Jesus sees them. It may just change your view of the world, not just for the week, but for the rest of your life.

Silent Preaching

Through the Looking GlassSt. Francis of Assisi had this to say about sharing the Gospel…

“Preach the Gospel at all times and, when necessary, use words.”

In the church, we put a lot of emphasis on sharing our faith. However, many times, our actions speak louder than our words. After all… who is our audience???

… The waitress we chewed out for getting our order wrong at a restaurant;

… The clerk we belittled for an honest mistake;

… The guy at work who saw us wasting company time;

… The new next-door neighbor we never had time to welcome to the neighborhood.

Sometimes we may struggle with the right thing to say when discussing our faith. Maybe we should first make sure that our actions reflect the love of God before we open our mouths.

Here’s a challenge for you: Share God’s love with someone in your life today, and, if necessary, use words.
